AI is taking over the world, and FOLO (Fear of Looming Obsolescence) is a real thing. But you and your ministry don’t have to become obsolete. Kenny Jahng, Founder of aiforchurchleaders.com and Editor & Chief for Church Tech Today, joined our Road to SALT webinar to help us understand how to transform our ministries with AI.

Let’s start with the basics: the name of the thing you’re hearing so much about is called Generative AI. It can help you and your team with a slew of things, but there are things it can’t do too (*cough* job security alert).

  • What can AI do?
    • Research
    • Analysis
    • Content

Think of the AI Chatbot as a seminary student intern. It needs very clear, thought-out instructions to function and perform menial tasks.

  • What AI CANNOT do?
    • Care
    • Think
    • Pastor

It does not think or feel. There is no humanity in AI.

So, what is AI good for?

  1. Communications
    1. Email
    2. Social Media
    3. Newsletters
    4. Ads: Headline, copy, images
  2. Research
    1. Brainstorming
    2. Summarizing content
    3. Topic suggestions/refinement
    4. Ads: headline, copy, images
  3. Analysis & Organizing
    1. Data manipulation
    2. Extracting core concepts
    3. Planning
    4. Reorganizing content
  4. Improvement
    1. Content logic, arguments
    2. Discussion questions
    3. Clarity of messaging
    4. Reframing for different audiences

With all that said, you might still be wondering how secure your job is. Well, there are three big types of work that AI CANNOT do. Most of it applies to ministry, too.

  1. Surprising: irregular, chaotic, physical work
  2. Social: social and emotional fulfillment work
  3. Scarce: work that has high stakes, low fault tolerance
