Finding Your Instrument

Fred Odom opened with a story from his Atlanta commute that God used to shift his perspective—from obsessing over “Will I get there?” to asking, “Who am I becoming on the way?” He challenged the audience to focus less on achievement and more on transformation, reminding them that God cares more about who we’re becoming than what we’re accomplishing. Through personal stories of comparison, setbacks, and growth, Fred invited creatives to uncover—not discover—the God-given purpose already placed inside them.

He guided listeners through three core ideas: understanding their purpose (why they exist), mission (who they serve and what they do for them), and superpower (how they uniquely contribute). Using humor, faith, and vivid illustrations—from Chick-fil-A’s purpose statement to Steph Curry’s three-point gift—Fred urged attendees to stop copying others’ “sheet music” and instead embrace their own God-designed instrument.

Practical Takeaways:

  1. Shift your question – Stop asking “Will I get there?” and start asking “Who am I becoming on the way?”

  2. Uncover your purpose – Reflect on what makes your heart sing and what breaks your heart to see God’s intent for you.

  3. Define your mission – Identify who you’re called to serve and what you’re called to do for them.

  4. Own your superpower – Recognize when you’re in flow and what others naturally affirm in you, and let that shine unapologetically.
