What if there were proactive ways to prevent burnout and sustain creative energy throughout the year? While I can’t promise a one-size-fits-all solution, my experience in the church’s creative realm has uncovered effective strategies to ward off burnout, even in the early months.

Uncover Your “Big Creative Why”

If you find yourself creating solely for approval, out of obligation, or without a clear purpose, burnout may be looming. Let your creative work be guided by your relationship with your craft and faith. Identify your “big creative why” – what inspires you to keep creating when challenges arise? Only that why will keep you going even when things get rough.

Embrace the Creative Privilege

Shift your perspective from “have” to “get.” Instead of viewing your creative tasks as obligations, see them as opportunities and gifts. Saying “I get to contribute creatively early in the year” can infuse positivity into your mindset and help combat burnout.

Anticipate Creative Challenges

Acknowledge that creative challenges will inevitably surface. Living in an imperfect world, it’s essential to prepare for creative hurdles, whether they involve technical issues, collaboration complexities, or artistic blocks. Make decisions in advance to navigate these challenges with resilience.

Pace Yourself

It is easy to get excited and hyped up for the new initiatives, goals, and vision for the new year and become frustrated when you do not see them come to fruition by February 1st. Take time to plan out how you will accomplish those goals and take it one day at a time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, as they say.

Trust Your Creative Leaders

While it can be challenging, trusting your creative leaders is vital for a harmonious creative year. Release any doubts or feelings of superiority. Embrace trust in your creative team to alleviate the pressure and contribute to a more positive and collaborative atmosphere. Humility is the key that unlocks the door to peace.

Welcome to 2024! The new year represents the start of a new chapter for most people. A chance to reflect and rethink. Our challenge to you, the creatives serving in the shadows at your churches and ministries is to take some time to set some goals and cast a vision for your personal growth as a creative in 2024. We have put together 6 New Year Resolutions for Creatives to help give you some ideas. But even if you don’t use one of our resolutions we hope you find ways to challenge yourself in 2024.

Pray Over Your Projects

What better place to start than with prayer? It is so easy to just get into the office sit down and start knocking out projects. But what if we were praying over everything we created, what if the heart behind every design, web build, line of code, live stream, video edit, storyboard, and stage design was prayer? How do you think that would impact your work? Instead of just completing tasks let’s keep our relationship with Christ at the center of everything we do.

Learn a New Skill Related to Your Craft

It can be easy to find what works and get in a rhythm (or maybe it’s a rut) and never try new methods, or technologies. Remember when you were first starting out? When you had to YouTube everything you needed to know or had to find an expert friend who could show you, you were learning something new all the time! Let’s find that spirit of learning again, pick a skill that would be helpful or add value to your work that you do not already know, and take some time to master it this year.

Learn a New Creative Skill that is Unrelated to Your Work

Alternatively, it is important to expand your creative mind and learn something that allows you to express your creative vision in a completely out-of-the-norm way. Maybe you build a scrapbook or try your hand at pottery. The important thing is to do something you are NOT good at and just have fun.

Teach Someone a New Skill

Share your knowledge! Maybe you are not an expert in what you do, but there is always someone who could learn something from you and vice versa. You do not need to be a certified expert to take someone under your wing and help them on their creative journey. Pick 1 person you can help and teach this year.

Start and Finish a Personal Passion Project this Year

We all have that one thing we have always wanted to do. Maybe it’s a podcast, recording a song, or hiking AT. Finding a personal passion project that you can start AND complete is a great resolution to have for 2024.

Get a Creative Accountability Partner and Challenge Each Other to Excellence

Find a friend whom you trust and admire both personally and creatively, and agree to share your creative works this year. Share your thoughts, criticism, and encouragement throughout the year, and push each other to be better at what you do. Then at the end of the year, you will be able to look back and see how you helped each other to grow.

Navigating the Minefield of Unreasonable Expectations in Creative Ministry

Struggling to meet unreasonable expectations of your role in creative ministry? You’re not alone. The needs and demands of our roles have never been higher. That’s why Phil Bowdle joined us on the Road to SALT to talk about how to navigate the minefield of unreasonable expectations.

When working in ministry, especially creative ministry, most of us wear many different hats. But it’s important to remember you also have to be human. So, how do we create healthy rhythms that break unrealistic expectations that pop up in ministry roles?

These unreasonable expectations come from:

Leaders above us
Peers around us
The voice within us

The Leaders Above Us

What if it’s your leader setting unrealistic expectations? This is the situation that most of us identify with more often than not. Remember that it is our leader’s job to give direction and set expectations. Keep in mind they, too, may be dealing with unrealistic expectations set on them. With that, it’s your job to help them understand what realistic expectations should look like.

In these moments, here are a few steps you can take:

Take a deep breath.
Remember it’s us with them, not us against them.
Ask what the “why” is. What’s the problem you’re trying to solve or the “win” behind the ask or project.
Clarify the expectations with your leader.
- Make sure your leader is informed on what it takes to pull it off. Costs, timing, what will get put on the back burner to make another ask the priority.
God didn’t call us to ministry burnout.

A great team activity: Ask each team member, “What is your job? What do people think your job is?” Phil shares that it’s amazing how often teams aren’t in line with what their leader’s role is or what their co-workers job actually is. Keep in mind, they may not know every bullet point on your job description, but understanding the foundation of each person’s role can go a long way.

“Prescription without diagnosis is malpractice.”

The Peers Around Us

Everyone often thinks their role is the most important, so it’s important to remember that we all feel this way and that is why unrealistic expectations often happen to those in creative ministry. You’ll have tasks that are directly dependent on your role and tasks that support others around you.

Because of these support roles, someone else’s procrastination can often turn into your emergency. But being proactive in your role will help both you and your peers. Phil suggests thinking of your time like a budget. You have a certain amount of dollars (time) in a budget. You can plan how you’re spending your dollars (hours) so that you don’t go over budget!

Block out your time and communicate your plans with your peers
Expectations go both ways: you need things from them to accomplish your win, and they need things from you so that they can win.

The Voice Within Us

We often hold ourselves to the unrealistic expectation that we can do it all… or that if we don’t we are failing. Just as dangerous is the thought that we need to be perfect at our job. What can we do to help manage the expectations we put on ourselves?

Be kind to yourself.
Chase progress over perfection.
Be faithful with your time and talent so that God can be in control of how fruitful you are.

Let’s start with the basics: the name of the thing you’re hearing so much about is called Generative AI. It can help you and your team with a slew of things, but there are things it can’t do too (*cough* job security alert).

What can AI do?

Think of the AI Chatbot as a seminary student intern. It needs very clear, thought-out instructions to function and perform menial tasks.

What AI CANNOT do?
- Care
- Think
- Pastor

It does not think or feel. There is no humanity in AI.

So, what is AI good for?

With all that said, you might still be wondering how secure your job is. Well, there are three big types of work that AI CANNOT do. Most of it applies to ministry, too.
